MONTCLAIR SHUTS DOWN BERKELEY

Berkeley College's New Jersey men's basketball team lost their third game in a row following a two-game winning streak when they faced off against Montclair State University last night at the Panzer Athletic Center.

Montclair dominated on the inside and on the fast break to take a commanding 44 to 24 lead at the half and a 54 to 34 edge on the boards for the night. Despite Berkeley's height advantage, the Bulldogs would fail to convert time and time again on the inside and at the free throw line, shooting only 3 for 11 from the line compared to the Red Hawks' 10 for 13. The Red Hawks would cruise to a 80 to 39 win to improve to 3-0 on the season.

The loss drops the Bulldogs record to 2-5. They were led by Jarrel Young who scored 18 points. Berkeley next plays at Drew University on Tuesday, December 1, at 7 P.M.

KNIGHTS DROP TWO AT ALBRIGHT TOURNAMENT

Berkeley College's New York men's basketball team, facing their stiffest competition of the early season in playing against two Division III teams in the Wyndham Reading Albright Tip-Off Tournament in Reading, PA last weekend, hung tough against their taller and more experienced opponents, but eventually fell in both games to drop their season record to 2-2.

In the opening game against host Albright College, Berkeley closed an early nine point deficit to five when Isaiah Didier (Brooklyn, NY/Sheephead Bay) hit two free throws to make the score 19-14, but then the Knights went into a scoring drought and fell behind by 24 with eight minutes remaining in the first half and would never fully recover. However, Berkeley rebounded nicely in the second half by outscoring Albright 46-35 to make the final score a respectable 88-70 defeat.

The Knights were led by Joshua Witsell (Jericho, NY/Jericho ) with 16 points and Damir Redzepagic (Bronx , NY/Cardinal Spellman) with 15 points. Kaseem Williams (Brooklyn, NY/Boys & Girls) contributed 15 points and four steals off the bench.

In the consolation game against DeSales University , Berkeley gave the nationally-ranked team (#7 in Division III) all they could handle for the first 13 minutes. Trailing 17-6, the Knights went on an 8-0 on consecutive baskets by Joshua Witsell (Jericho, NY/Jericho ), Stanley Hamp (Brooklyn, NY/Nazareth ) and Kaseem Williams (Brooklyn, NY/Boys & Girls) to pull within four at 17-14. But that would be as close as Berkeley would get as DeSales would go on a 31-13 run to close out the half en route to a 92-47 victory.

Witsell led the Knights with 15 points while Keith Myrick (Hamden, CT/Hamden ) added 11 points off the bench. Berkeley’s next game will be on Saturday, December 5, at 2 p.m. when they face Borough of Manhattan Community College.

BERKELEY DROPS HEARTBREAKER TO YESHIVA

The Berkeley College New Jersey men's basketball team lost in overtime against Yeshiva University 64 to 63 in the consolation game of the Ramapo College Tip-Off Tournament on Sunday.

Down 27 to 24 at halftime, the Bulldogs managed their first lead of the game with 15 minutes remaining in the second half on two free throws by freshman guard Jarrel Young (Newark Tech/Newark, NJ). Yeshiva would answer right back and from that point on the lead would go back and forth until a free throw by Tyron Davis (Eastside/Paterson, NJ) would tie the score with .5 seconds remaining to send the game into overtime.

The overtime period mirrored regulation with both teams taking leads. Junior forward Donovan Black (Morristown/Morristown, NJ) would be fouled while taking a three point shot with .5 seconds remaining and his lone miss at the line would be the difference in the final score.

Unlike the Wentworth game the day before, Berkeley dominated the boards against Yeshiva outrebounding the Maccabees 43 to 34. Free throw shooting would continue to plague the Bulldogs as they managed only 57.7% from the line.

Berkeley was led by Young who led all scorers with 19 points and was selected to the All-Tournament Team. Sophore guard Justin Lewandowski (Bordentown Regional/Bordentown, NJ) would also reach double figures with 10 points, including three three-pointers.

SIZE MATTERS IN BERKELEY LOSS TO WENTWORTH

Berkeley College's New Jersey men's basketball team lost the first game in the Ramapo College Tip-Off Tournament on Saturday to Wentworth Institute of Technology by a score of 83 to 65.

Berkeley led by two with 14:57 left to go in the first half when six-foot eleven-inch junior center Sam Herrick entered the game sparking an 11-0 run. Herrick would end up with 13 points and 8 rebounds.

The Bulldogs also couldn't overcome a dreadful performance at the free-throw line making only 18 of 33 attempts.
